SSE is investing £350 million in Siemens’ new highly efficient combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant.

The Scottish energy giant and the global technology firm will work together to develop the Keadby 2 facility in Lincolnshire, which is expected to have a total capacity of 840MW and 63% efficiency.

Siemens said it will use remote monitoring and diagnostics to maintain and optimise the performance of the power plant over a 15-year service contract.

Construction at the site, which aims to provide flexible large-scale power generation to the UK grid, will begin this summer.

The facility is expected to enter commercial operation in 2022.

Martin Pibworth, SSE’s Wholesale Director, said: “Its highly efficient technology, not previously seen in the UK, will provide firm, reliable power from the early 2020s at half the carbon emissions of the coal generation it is replacing.

“New CCGT complements SSE’s ambitions to develop more offshore and onshore wind as CCGTs remain well-placed to provide flexible, grid-scale back up to complement the large volumes of renewables the UK needs to meet its low carbon targets.”
