Greenhouse gas emissions in Northern Ireland fell by 29% per person between 1990 and 2015.

Latest statistics from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs reveal the population increased by 16% over this period while greenhouse gas emissions fell 18%.

Emissions per unit of electricity generated decreased 24%, driven by the growth in renewable generation, a shift away from coal use and improvements in energy efficiency.

Emissions per household also fell by 25% in five years as a result of fuel switching to natural gas from more carbon intensive fuels such as coal and oil.

Greenhouse gas emissions from waste management decreased by 68%, largely due to the introduction of methane capture and oxidation systems at landfill sites.
