Nearly third of Africa implementing climate “smart” schemes

Nearly a third of Africa is putting in place green schemes to benefit the climate and environment, the African Development Bank has suggested.
The bank said it is supporting one regional and 16 national investment plans (out of the 54 nations) in renewables, forests, resilience and transport across the continent.
These include a concentrated solar power project in Morocco, sustainable land and water management in Mozambique, geothermal fields in Kenya and financing renewables and energy efficiency through local banks in Nigeria.
Mafalda Duarte, Coordinator of the AfDB’s Climate Investment Funds said the bank’s finding helped the 16 countries carry out “critical legwork” to continue the projects.
She added that putting climate response into national development plans is “a must if climate response is to have any lasting impact”.
The AfDB has dedicated $4.3 billion (£2.6bn) to clean energy since 2007.
