Carlsberg has opened its first carbon-neutral brewery in Sweden.

The facility in Falkenberg emits zero carbon emissions from its energy consumption, after completely switching to biogas and green electricity.

More than a quarter of the site’s thermal energy comes from biogas generated from the brewery’s own wastewater.

The achievement aligns with the company’s goal of eliminating carbon emissions from all of its breweries and seeing a 30% reduction in its total carbon footprint by 2030.

Carlsberg plans to totally eliminate using coal as a source of energy by 2022.

Ted Akiskalos, Managing Director of Carlsberg Sweden, said: “For many, many years we have been working to create a more efficient brewery with as little impact on our environment as possible.

“It is motivating that we now take a big step forward and use solely carbon neutral energy sources.”

Brewery and pub retailer Marston’s has been granted a self-supply water licence.
