Green Investment Group (GIG) has acquired the developer of an offshore wind farm in Galway, Ireland.

The so-called Sceirde Rocks project is a proposed 400MW offshore wind farm, which is predicted to generate enough energy to power up to 295,000 homes.

GIG Project Director Séamus McCabe said: “The Sceirde Rocks project is set to be a flagship development for the West of Ireland, which is home to one of the best wind resources in the world.”

Ireland has set a target to have 70% of its electricity needs covered by renewable energy sources – to achieve this more than 5GW of offshore wind is predicted to be developed by the end of the decade.
