G7 leaders have been called to agree on a carbon emissions target at their meeting in Germany this weekend.

We Mean Business, a coalition of organisations which work with thousands of the world’s most influential businesses and investors, is urging them to support a global objective of net zero greenhouse gas emissions “well before the end of the century in the Paris agreement”.

They are also asking them to encourage all countries joining the Paris agreement toset out national decarbonisation pathways to 2050.

The letter states: “Today business leaders ask you to seize the opportunity presented by the forthcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21) to honor these commitments.

“For Paris to be a success, business needs more than an agreement. Business needs a clear long-term decarbonisation signal to accelerate low-carbon and climate-resilient investment in the real economy.”

It adds around $90 trillion will be invested in infrastructure in cities, land-use and energy in the next 15 years.
