The 25 December is an intense day for the most skilled of cooks – and having the oven on for hours to roast the turkey is energy intensive too.

To help peel back the energy waste, the National Trust’s development chef Clive Goudercourt has put together his top tips for the big day.

Multi-task

“Roast your vegetables alongside your turkey and potatoes instead of boiling unnecessarily on the hob,” says Clive.

Christmas portion control!

“Only cook the right amount of food that you need. Cooking excessive amounts means much more energy is wasted,” says Clive.

Put a lid on it!

Don’t let things bubble away unchecked, advises Clive: “Put lids on pans when boiling to help keep the heat contained.”

Brr-ight idea for frozen goodies

Pre-cooking food and stashing it in the freezer is often a trick used to get ahead. But your freezer will run better without all that extra ice build up. Clive says: “Defrost your freezer before Christmas. It will run more efficiently and create space for any leftovers.”

Double up

Use your oven space wisely, says Clive: “Make items like mince pies in advance and cook them when using the oven for something else.”
