US actress Shailene Woodley has been arrested during a protest against a proposed oil pipeline in North Dakota.

Environmental campaigners and Native Americans claim Energy Transfer’s $3.7bn (£2.8bn) Dakota Access Pipeline will contaminate waterways and desecrate sacred land.

However the company said: “The pipeline will be monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year by full-time operations maintenance staff. Additionally, the pipeline will include automated valve technology that will automatically close if a problem is detected. Energy Transfer holds their pipelines to a standard that exceeds state and federal regulations.”

The pipeline is planned to span 1,168 miles across Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota and South Dakota, transporting up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

Ms Woodley, who has starred in ‘Divergent’ and ‘Snowden’, was arrested whilst broadcasting the 200-people protest on Facebook.

She said the protest was peaceful and believes she was singled out because of her fame and the fact she was streaming events.

Ms Woodley added: “The reason why I think people need to get involved in this is because clean water is now a political issue. It shouldn’t have to be but it is. The only way we’re going to change that is if we stand up, if we call congressmen and we tell them that we believe in clean water, not only for our lives but for future generations as well.”

Around 27 people are believed to have been arrested on charges of criminal trespass and rioting.
