Kazakhstan is receiving $40million (£25.2m) to improve its heating services in the city of Pavlodar.

The local heating provider Pavlodar Heat Networks LLP, owned by the Central-Asian Electric Power Corporation (CAEPCo), will reform the district heating networks.

The European Bank for Research and Development (EBRD) is providing $30 million (£18.9m) and the Climate Investments Funds is lending $10 million (£6.3m).

The sector in Pavlodar has received very little investments in the past 40 years for the maintenance of its heating systems which has led to energy waste, heat losses and higher carbon emissions, according to the EBRD.

Sandugash Beisenbekova, Associate Banker based in the EBRD’s Resident Office in Almaty said: “By cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 30,000 tonnes a year – comparable to the emissions of approximately 13,000 cars- the project will also help alleviate the environmental impact of heat production.”
