£185,000 boost for textile recycling in London
Funding worth £185,000 has been awarded to six recycling firms to boost the reuse and recycling of clothing, carpets and mattresses in the capital.
The cash will help introduce carpet recycling at local household waste and recycling sites and a kerbside collection service which will allow clothing to be recycled alongside other goods.
Around 200,000 tonnes of textiles currently go to landfill in London every year and the projects are expected to divert 3,500 tonnes of clothing in the next 12 months.
The cash is part of the London Waste and Recycling Board’s (LWARB) ‘Textile Reuse and Recycling Fund’, which has a further £215,000 still available for other projects.
Clyde Loakes, LWARB Efficiencies Committee Chair and Board Member said: “As well as reducing the burden on the capital’s landfill sites, increasing textile reuse and recycling will also help to grow London’s economy by creating jobs and volunteering/training opportunities and have a positive monetary impact on the public purse.”
Last year London launched its first heating network that uses household waste to generate energy.
