Zero Waste Week calls for less food to be binned

People are being called on to take a zero waste pledge for the duration of National Zero Waste Week, which starts on Monday.
The campaign – now in its sixth year – will focus on food waste this time with ‘Use it Up’ as its call to action.
Zero Waste Week has partnered with the Rubbish Diet, a waste reduction challenge. They want people to become ‘Zero Heroes’, by re-evaluating their habits and cutting the amount of food they send to landfills.
There are a number of suggestions for those trying to lighten the bin man’s load: controlling portion sizes, resisting ‘buy one get one free’ offers, ‘ignoring’ best before dates and not shopping whilst hungry.
Describing why she started the scheme, Founder Rachelle Strauss told a news outlet : “First, food waste is an economic issue – the average householder throws away £50 per month of food while it costs the food industry an estimated £5 billion per year. Second it’s an environmental issue – there is so much embedded energy in food from water to fertilisers to transportation, storage and packaging that it’s a crime to waste it.”
