Washington DC has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with a green energy firm to supply 35% of the city’s electricity with wind power.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the deal with Iberdrola Renewables earlier this week.
It will supply Washington with around 125,000MWh of emission-free electricity every year, the equivalent electricity needed to power 12,000 District homes annually.
The PPA is expected to save taxpayers $45 million (£29m) during the next 20 years.
The department which manages the District’s portfolio of government buildings – will purchase the entire output of Iberdrola’s South Chestnut 46MW wind farm in Pennsylvania.
Ms Bowser said: “The District is well on its way to achieving the Sustainable DC goal of using renewables to satisfy 50% of DC’s energy supply by 2032.”
