A full-scale tidal energy generator, claimed to be among the world’s first demonstration devices to produce green tidal power, has been unveiled in Wales.

Tidal Energy’s underwater DeltaStream turbine will be installed in Ramsey Sound in Pembrokeshire for a 12-month trial, generating energy from tidal currents on the sea bed.

Energy produced from the 150-tonne device – named ‘Ysbryd y Mor’ meaning ‘Spirit of the Sea’ – which is as high as a seven-storey building, will be used to power homes in St Davids.

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones hailed it as a “landmark” project.

He added: “[It] will not only help us to meet our sustainable energy ambitions but also provide significant opportunities for local people and businesses.”

The project has been supported by £8 million of European Union funding, matched by majority shareholder Eco2.
