Vattenfall is to invest more than €200 million (£177m) in an onshore wind project in the Netherlands.

The Swedish firm plans to repower and expand the Wieringermeer wind farm, replacing older wind mills with the latest technology, to a capacity of 180MW by 2019.

It has also bought the adjacent wind farm extension, with an additional capacity of 115MW.

The onshore wind farm will reach a capacity of 295MW by the end of the decade, generating enough electricity to power 250,000 homes a year.

It will be build and operated by the company’s Dutch subsidiary Nuon.
