The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given the green light for a $500 million (£309m) petroleum processing facility in Texas.

It has issued a final greenhouse gas ‘Prevention of Significant Deterioration’ (PSD) construction permit, allowing CCI Corpus Christi to start building the 100,000 barrel-a-day plant.

Under EPA rules finalised in 2010, new projects that increase greenhouse gas emissions require federal air permits.

A petroleum terminal will also be built, which will include storage tanks and loading operations that can handle 500,000 barrels a day of crude condensate – an ultra-light oil –  for export.

It will also be used to produce diesel, jet fuel and other petroleum products.

Ron Curry, EPA Regional Administrator said: “Helping businesses minimise their greenhouse gas emissions will help protect these communities from dangers such as increased flooding and storms.”
