The US Government is seeking information on the development of coal-based “power plants of the future”.

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy has issued a Request for Information (RFI), inviting stakeholder input on technical and market considerations to inform research and development in support of the design, construction and operation of a small-scale, modular coal-based pilot-scale plant.

These so-called “plants of the future” are expected to be modular for lower cost, designed using advanced methods, small scale and highly efficient, with more than 40% efficiency.

The DOE said: “The objective of this RFI is to support DOE’s mission to lead research and technology development that promotes the advancement of coal-fired power plants that provide stable power generation with operational flexibility, high efficiency and low emission.”

It is accepting views until 8th June 2018.
