UK’s floating energy industry gets wind in its sails
Two marine energy firms are to collaborate to develop floating wind technology in the UK.
Atlantis Resources and Ideol have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of a 1.5GW floating offshore wind project.
It is hoped the project will catalyse a boom in Britain’s floating wind energy industry .
The companies say abundant wind resources, government incentives, strong support frameworks and extensive offshore wind and fossil fuel expertise mean the UK is uniquely positioned to lead the emerging market.
Atlantis will lead the review and selection of potential sites and will also be responsible for attracting funding. Ideol will design the technical concepts and be the exclusive provider for the floating foundation systems.
The project will have a pre-commercial testing phase of up to 100MW commissioned by 2021.
Plans for another prototype floating wind farm off the coast of Scotland was announced earlier this month.
