The UK’s electricity grid operator National Grid has reported the highest ever amount of electricity generated from wind, with more than 4 GW generated at the peak today.
RenewableUK, the wind and marine energy association, has hailed the record-breaking figures, which top the previous record of 3.8 GW set on May 13th.
According to RenewableUK, as of 9.56 am this morning, wind turbines fed 4.131 GW of electricity into the national grid making up nearly 11% of the total supply.
“This record high shows that wind energy is providing a reliable, secure supply of clean electricity to an ever-greater number of British homes and businesses,” says RenewableUK’s chief executive, Maria McCaffery.
The picture could, in fact, be even rosier for wind power because around a third of all turbine capacity in the UK is connected directly to local electricity networks rather than the national grid.
RenewableUK says that is if this extra 2.2 GW of capacity it taken into account, the total amount of electricity being generated could be up to a third greater.
