Imports of gas in the first quarter of 2014 were 21% lower compared to the same time last year, latest statistics from DECC reveal.

That was a result of warmer temperatures, it suggests, as exports were also 0.3% lower in the first four months this year.

Compared to 2012, gas exports and imports reduced by 24% and 2.6%.

However, production rose by 3.7% in the first quarter of this year compared to 2013.

“This increase reflects the resolution of the Elgin gas leak, which impacted on associated gas production from March 2012 until mid-2013”, DECC said.

Demand was 19.6% lower this year compared to the first quarter of 2013, which was also driven by the warmer temperatures seen in 2014.
