The UK Government is inviting businesses to bid for a share of a £7.75 million competition to develop domestic applications of demand side response (DSR) technologies.

The aim of the competition is to identify and demonstrate controllable, flexible demand in real domestic environments which can be replicated at significant scale in identical or similar applications.

DSR is expected to play a key role within the future electricity system and can be used to reduce demand from the grid during peak periods.

Grants of up to £30,000 will be available for up to 30 feasibility studies in the first phase and between £250,000 and £1 million will be awarded for demonstration projects to be completed by end of December 2020.

BEIS said: “The focus of the competition is on identifying and testing novel usage of flexible demand which do not currently participate in DSR, largely using the application and integration of existing DSR and other IT and communication technologies – rather than on the development of new DSR consumer products such as smart appliances.”
