A third of businesses are not taking measures to make their offices environmentally friendly.

That’s according to a new survey of 500 businesses conducted by money saving advisor Make It Cheaper, which shows many business owners are missing opportunities to reduce their energy emissions and save on costs – nearly half spend more than £1,000 on energy each month.

Around 31% of UK business owners said they don’t take extra measures to make their office space greener and 18% said they don’t consider energy efficiency when buying new equipment.

Employees answered slightly differently – a much higher 67% don’t feel like their employer takes eco-friendly measures in the workplace and 16% said their management don’t think about how sustainable new equipment is.

Although many of these firms could save money by switching energy suppliers, 13% have never changed and only 7% have switched in the last year.

Nearly half said it wasn’t worth the time, 37% were put off by exit fees and 36% said it would be too difficult.

Nick Heath, Head of Energy Insight at Make it Cheaper, said: “There is a common misconception that changing energy suppliers for your business is an arduous task, yet it couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Also, many suppliers don’t issue exit fees and for those that do, the savings made by switching usually outweighs the charge.”
