Engineering giant Siemens is offering a new ‘Smart Pay As You Go’ (PAYG) solution in a bid to provide more flexible options to energy customers.

It will help consumers top up their smart electricity and gas meter when they want and virtually anywhere they want using either the web, an app, text message or via the telephone.

It offers consumers flexibility in how they manage their accounts as they can choose “how they pay, when they pay and how much they pay, helping them to manage their budget”.

The PAYG software solution – which Siemens claims will support energy suppliers with their smart metering roll-out to prepayment customers – also sends a text or e-mail alert to warn a customer when their meter credit is low and help them stay in control of their energy use.

Kevin Tutton, Head of Operational Services at Siemens Smart Grid Division said: “Around 4.3 million – or 16% – of households in Great Britain currently use prepayment meters and we want to help reduce the stigma attached to prepayment metering by offering customers a greater variety of payment methods and making this type of metering a lifestyle choice, rather than a last resort for repayment of debt.”
