The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme has reached 50,000 domestic installations.

The milestone brings the total renewable heat generated by all accredited installations to 827,000MWh. The scheme is estimated to save around 3.4 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide over its 20-year operation.

Established in 2014, the Domestic RHI encourages householders to make use of renewable energy technologies to generate their own heating. They are paid a quarterly tariff over seven years based on their renewable heat output.

It is a key policy of the UK government in its aim to meet carbon emissions reduction targets.

Gareth John, Associate Director of the RHI at Ofgem E-Serve, said: “Since the launch of the Domestic RHI programme we’ve worked hard to deliver government policy through efficient administration.

“We aim to provide clear guidance to homeowners and installers to make the process of applying for and complying with the Domestic RHI as straightforward as possible.”
