Renewables generated a quarter of UK’s electricity

Renewables generated 25.1% of the UK’s electricity in the first quarter of the year.

That’s according to new data revealed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) which added the figure is 2.3% higher compared to the same period last year.

In total, renewable electricity generation was 23.3TWh, an increase of 6.4% compared to 2015.

Biomass generation had the biggest increase. It rose by 29% to 5.6TWh while solar went up by 41% to 1.3TWh, according to BEIS.

Electricity generated from onshore wind decreased by 11% to 6.4 TWh, however offshore production increased by 10% to 5.1TWh.

At the end of the first quarter of the year, renewable electricity capacity was 31.2GW, a 11.8% increase on a year earlier.
