Renewable energy company RES has broken ground on a 10MW battery storage project in Germany.

It is building the facility – funded by the EU and supported by the state of Schleswig-Holstein – for German utility VBB.

The project will provide grid stabilisation and back-up power to the Bordesholm area in the event of a network disruption or failure – and data generated will also be used by research institutions.

Frank Günther, Managing Director of VBB said: “This is a unique solution for an island network linking into a public power supply network. With this smart solution, the use of coal and nuclear power plants can be avoided in the future. New, modern battery storage plants can ensure the required system stability by using only renewable energy.”

The project is expected to be commissioned next spring.
