A third of cars manufactured by Volkswagen with defeat devices have not been fixed yet.

New figures revealed by the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) suggest the car manufacturer has fixed only two-thirds of the cars that were affected by the emissions scandal.

The Committee found the number of fixes to Volkswagen manufactured cars has fallen to 2% of the affected vehicles each month.

The number of Skoda vehicles being fixed however “rose rapidly” in July and August and remains roughly double those of other makes, according to the EAC.

EAC Chair Mary Creagh MP has written to Transport Minister John Hayes to express the Committee’s concerns around the lack of progress around Vokswagen vehicles and why the position for Skoda is different to other makes.

In a letter in January this year, Mr Hayes said the DfT had regular update meetings with Volkswagen to ensure good progress is being made in fixing the 1.2 million vehicles affected by the emissions scandal.

However the EAC’s analysis found the rate of fixes has been declining since then.

She said: “It is over two years since the VW emissions scandal was discovered, a third of vehicles have yet to be fixed and rates have slowed considerably.”

Ms Creagh added in the letter: “I would like to know how the Department and VW intend to reach customers who are not having their vehicles fixed and do not respond to communication. There have been reports that some drivers think the fixes will impact performance. Are the Departtment or the company taking measures to combat this perception?”

ELN has contacted the Department for Transport and Volkswagen for statements.
