No trucking way! Frozen air to power commercial van

Posted on 07 September 2013 by Vicky Ellis

The power of frozen air is to be harnessed in trucks – in an engine containing liquid nitrogen.

Last week its developers won a grant from the Technology Strategy Board, the UK’s innovation agency, to build and test their liquid air engine fitted in a commercial vehicle.

A group made up of the Dearman Engine company, engineering testers MIRA, frozen air power firm Air Products and Loughborough University are aiming to show off their design by 2014.

The Dearman Engine works by boiling liquid air or nitrogen (which is the main component of air) to produce high-pressure gas that can be used to drive a piston engine, creating shaft power.
