Northern Ireland Water has been fined £300 for a pollution offence.

It pleaded guilty for a “polluting discharge” from the Ros-Na-Rig Wastewater Pumping Station (WWPS) at Islandmagee.

A Senior Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, found a waterway at Lunnon Road cloudy with grey fungal growth and also detected a sewage smell in August last year.

The length of waterway affected by the discharge was more than 150 metres, the Agency said.

“A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter, which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway”, it added.
