ScottishPower Renewables has officially opened the newly repowered Coal Clough wind farm near Burnley.

In the last 18 months, the company invested around £22.5 million to replace 24 turbines that were installed in 1992.

The total generating capacity of the wind farm has risen from 9.6MW to 16MW.

According to ScottishPower, Coal Clough was one of the first commercial wind farms to be built in the UK when it became operational in 1992.

Data from the original site shows it generated more than 400,000MWh of electricity during its 21-year operational lifetime.

Operations Managing Director Kenny Peberdy said: “Coal Clough has produced enough power to meet the electricity demands of just under 5,000 homes every year since 1992 and the new project should meet the needs of over 8,500 homes per year.”
