New York State offers $1.8m for clean heat and cooling

New York State has announced $1.8 million (£1.36m) of funding to help install clean heating and cooling systems in homes and businesses.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo says the move will significantly help achieve his goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half before 2030.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) initiative will bring potential customers together through community campaigns so they can obtain joint purchase discounts for air and ground source heat pumps, biomass equipment and solar heating.

These campaigns can be proposed by municipalities or community based organisations and will receive up to $150,000 (£113,200) for each campaign, with additional funds available for workforce development and low-to-moderate income engagement strategies.

Currently, natural gas, propane and oil are the most commonly used energy source for heating residential and office spaces and providing domestic hot water, generating about a third of the state’s energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.

Alicia Barton, President and CEO of NYSERDA, said: “Clean heating and cooling systems will provide users with energy bill savings, increased comfort levels and health benefits compared to conventional heating and cooling technologies.

“It’s a win-win for consumers and the environment and is vital to meeting Governor Cuomo’s nation-leading goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
