New laws mean British drivers will be able to use technology like remote control parking and motorway assist from next month.

The changes have been implemented following a government consultation earlier this year which received “overwhelming support” from manufacturers, insurance groups and haulage companies.

The government says the technology has the potential to make driving more fuel efficient and improve air quality across the country.

They also aim to ensure UK road laws are fit to support automated driving technology as its develops and provide clarity on what features can be used.

The government has also commissioned a detailed review into driving laws to ensure the UK remains “one of the best places in the world” to develop, test and drive self-driving vehicles.

Mike Hawes, CEO of The Society of Motor Manufacturers Traders (SMMT), said: “Today’s announcement is just one step towards increasing automation but it is an important one enabling increased convenience especially for those with restricted mobility.

“It is another welcome commitment from government to keep the UK firmly at the forefront of connected and autonomous vehicle development and roll-out.”
