The US Government has announced a new energy efficiency standard for furnace fans which is expected to help cut energy use and carbon emissions.

Furnace fans are used to circulate air through ductwork in residential heating and cooling systems and use around 1,000kWh of energy every year, according to the Energy Department.

The new rule is expected to reduce energy usage by 46%, cut carbon emissions by up to 340 million metric tonnes – equivalent to the annual electricity use of 4.7 million homes –  as well as save more than $9 billion (£5.3bn) in electricity bills by 2030.

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said: “These standards help Americans save money by saving energy while also protecting the environment.”

It is the latest of eight finalised standards and nine proposed standards issued since the Climate Action Plan was announced by Barack Obama last year.
