Mexico is taking steps to become the second nation after the UK to bring in legally binding climate change targets.

The legislation, which would require a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with ‘business as usual’ levels by 2020, has been passed by the Senate.

The initial target is followed by goal of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with 2000 levels by 2050.

Under the plans, Mexico would also have to generate 35% of its energy from renewable sources by 2024.

The legislation would also require government agencies to use renewables and establish a national mechanism for reporting emissions in various sectors.
