London’s ‘first’ waste to heat network goes live

An energy from waste heating network, said to be the first in London, was officially launched on Friday.

Called the South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP), the £7 million facility in Deptford – operated by Veolia Environment – will be used to provide heating and hot water to 2,500 homes in Bermondsey, Southwark.

It has the capacity to process around 430,000 tonnes of waste ever year. Around 8,000 tonnes of carbon emissions are also expected to be cut per year – equivalent to taking 2,700 cars off the roads.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove (pictured), Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Recycling told ELN the facility will divert waste from going to landfill, with rubbish that can’t be recycled being used to convert into energy in the SELCHP plant.

He added householders that will be provided with heating from the facility will see reductions in their energy bills.

Mr Hargrove said: “We have made sure the price mechanism for the residents is always going to be below the current price of gas for the next 20 years.”

The system is due to be connected on the 12th of December and will run for 20 years, after which the council will decide whether to retain the scheme or revert back to the traditional supply of gas.
