Householders in England and Wales could receive up to £1000 cash back for taking energy efficiency measures in a government initiative to kick start its flagship Green Deal scheme.
The government announced on Friday the setting up of a £125 million fund to reward early adopters of the scheme, which will allow homeowners and businesses to pay for energy efficiency improvements through savings on their energy bills.
The Green Deal cash back will be available from January 28th 2013 on a first-come, first-served basis and the more work that is carried out – like loft or solid wall insulation, replacement windows or doors, or more efficient heating – the more cash back could be received.
Each energy saving measure will be eligible for a certain amount of cash back, from £10 for topping up hot water cylinder insulation to £650 for solid wall insulation.
The initial rates of reimbursement will be guaranteed for the first £40 million allocated, with the best offers available at the start of the scheme. The amount received will be capped at 50% of the householders’ contribution, with the money coming from the installer.
“It really is a great offer – the more work households have done, the more energy they stand to save and the more cash they receive,” says Energy Secretary Ed Davey. “The Green Deal will provide unprecedented choice for consumers wanting to improve their homes and make them more energy efficient. This cash back offer will help get the Green Deal off to a flying start.”
The initiative is also designed to help companies delivering the Green Deal drum up custom.
