Guatemala installs ‘largest solar plant in Central America’
The first utility-scale solar power plant in Guatemala – and also claimed to be the largest in Central America – is now reportedly online.
The 5MW Sibo plant in Estanzuela, eastern Guatemala has more than 20,000 solar panels and is expected to generate 12 million kWh of electricity – equivalent to powering around 24,000 homes.
The electricity produced will be sold via a 16-year power purchase agreement with national energy company, Energuate.
The project is a joint venture between developer Greenergyze, Spanish solar firm, Gransolar and investors Grupo Ecos, the Guatemalan Green Group and EcoSolar.
Sebastian García-Prendes from Greenergyze was quoted as saying: “[The project] should make a real contribution to Guatemala’s sustainable development by reducing the nation’s carbon footprint, stabilising electricity tariffs and reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels.”
