Google has pledged to invest $100 million (£59.5m) to help finance the purchase of rooftop solar systems for householders.

It has joined forces with US firm SunPower, which is also committing around $150 million (£89.3m) to support the programme.

They expect to make solar power “more accessible to more homeowners” as well as help reduce their carbon footprint.

Rob Parker, part of Google’s renewable energy team explains how it works: “Using the fund, we buy the solar panel systems. Then we lease them to homeowners at a cost that’s typically lower than their normal electricity bill.”

Overall, Google claims it has invested more than $1 billion (£0.6bn) in 16 renewable energy projects around the world.
