France-UK power link ‘could disturb war graves’

Hundreds of Holocaust victims’ graves from World War Two could be disturbed by an electricity link between France and Britain.
The Nazi-occupied British island of Alderney in the English Channel was the site of four concentration and work camps in the 1940s.
Jewish, French and Russian prisoners were held on the island and forced to perform hard labour – many died in the process or were killed by their captors.
Preliminary drilling for the £500 million project has reportedly already damaged parts of the island’s burial ground, with archeologists warning further work would lead to greater damage.
The FAB project, which stands for France-Alderney-Britain, is being developed by French supplier RTE and a joint venture between Transmission Investment LLP and Alderney Renewable Energy Limited.
It is designed to provide a high-voltage power link between a substation in the French town of Menuel and a substation in Exeter, allowing the two countries to exchange larger volumes of power.
ELN has contacted EDF France subsidiary RTE for a statement.
