The first offshore wind farm in the US has gone into operation.

Deepwater Wind’s 30MW Block Island project is now delivering electricity from its five turbines to the US grid.

It uses a special ‘sea2shore’ submarine transmission cable to transmit power to the Rhode Island coast, where it can power up to 17,000 homes.

Technicians from GE Renewable Energy tested the farm for four months before its official opening, following two years of installation.

US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said: “America’s first offshore wind farm is powering homes and businesses with clean, reliable energy. This is a historic milestone for reducing our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels and I couldn’t be more thrilled that it’s happening here in the Ocean State.

“Congratulations to all of the many partners whose years of diligent planning and outreach have put Rhode Island at the forefront of clean energy innovation and positioned our offshore wind industry for growth.”

Hornsea Project Three in the UK will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm if it is granted approval and constructed.
