Dutch power grid operator TenneT plans to spend more than €500 million (£393m) to boost electricity flow between Northern Europe and Scandinavia.

It is investing in three large-scale projects which will increase the capacity of electricity transferred between the Netherlands on one end and Germany and Denmark on the other.

The COBRA submarine cable, which will directly connect the Netherlands with Denmark, will have a capacity of around 700MW – as much as a small nuclear power plant.

The Doetinchem-Wessel and the Meeden-Diele will interconnect the Netherlands and Germany.

TenneT CEO Mel Kroon said: “This will have a positive effect on the purchasing power of our households and on the competitive position of Dutch businesses. Many hundreds of millions of euro can be gained.”
