DONG Energy is to launch a battery solution at its Burbo Bank offshore wind farm.

The 2MW storage system will provide frequency response to the 90MW clean energy facility, which will help stabilise and maintain the operability of the grid by injecting varying levels of power.

The frequency on the grid must remain close to 50Hz – if it deviates from these limits, it can affect everything connected to it, from home appliances to power stations.

DONG says combining a battery system with a wind farm can provide fast and more cost effective frequency support, which means electricity consumers can save money.

The firm claims the project is the first of its kind to be installed at an offshore wind farm and will be in place by the end of the year.

The Burbo Bank installation is capable of supplying up to 80,000 UK homes with renewable energy.

Richard Smith, Head of Network Capability for National Grid, said: “As Great Britain’s energy mix changes, we know that ensuring a safe and stable supply of energy into future will require more flexible services.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how the DONG Energy solution of storage connected to the offshore wind farm will provide services to help us respond to day-to-day operational challenges and maintain the frequency of 50Hz on Great Britain’s electricity system.”
