British Gas has introduced a new fixed-rate tariff that could prove to be cheaper than the current price cap for some customers.

In London, households consuming a typical amount of gas and electricity could be paying £2,049 for a one-year fix from British Gas, according to Go Compare.

The energy price cap sets a maximum price that suppliers can charge consumers for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy they use and from 1st July, it stands at an annual level of £2,074 for a dual fuel household paying by direct debit based on typical consumption.

The move from British Gas aligns with other UK suppliers who are also introducing cheaper fixed-rate tariffs than the price cap after several years, as energy prices have been on a downward trend.
