Hundreds of jobs in North Wales are expected to be secure, thanks to a £4 million fund to manage the decommissioning of two nuclear power plants.

‘Shaping the Future’, which was set up in 2008, has secured £1.2 million from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and £2.3 million from the European Social Fund, through the Welsh Government.

It aims to mitigate the impact of job losses at two Magnox sites – Wylfa and Trawsfynyfdd – while strengthening the decommissioning supply chain and helping people get into alternative employment.

There are around 1,500 jobs across both sites.

The training programme signed up 1,402 employees and many took advantage of the one-to-one career coaching available on site and secured a wide range of qualifications.

Welsh Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology Julie James said: “North Wales has some significant and exciting economic opportunities ahead and we are keen to work with you to capitalise on these opportunities to build a strong and sustainable skills system for the future.”
