Green electricity also grew to 16.7% of total installed capacity during the same year, according to data released by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Its report pointed out renewable electricity accounted for 64% of new US electricity capacity additions, compared to 52% in 2014.
Solar generation increased by 35.8% to 11.7TWh and wind rose by 5.1% to 9.3TWh.
The latter source produced 34% of total renewable electricity generation while biomass, solar and geothermal generated 11%, 8% and 3% respectively.
Generation from hydropower dropped by 3.2% to 8.2TWh but it still produced more than 44% of total power.
