The power system has had to adjust as a result of a drop in wind generation since yesterday, with only 1GW of production forecast for today, according to the daily market report from npower.

That has led to Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plants having to pick up to 16GW of capacity. The level of demand from gas power stations are also back above 40 million cubic meters.

However, there have been weaker exports through the interconnectors, Client Portfolio Manager Tim Carter said.

The gas market is also “short today”, which led to an early morning push up in the prompt market by as much as £1.5p a therm.

“Oil is back up to nearly $104 a barrel and we could see further direction to the Pound-Euro pairing today”, Mr Carter said.

He suggested keeping an eye out on “any further clarification on Ukrainian sanctions to either calm or heighten any European gas supply fears”.
