India and Argentina have agreed to strengthen co-operation in the field of renewable energy, it has been announced.

The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said the two nations would work together in solar and wind energy and biofuel generation.

According to the Ministry, Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah “highlighted the Indian approach to biofuels which is based solely on non-food feedstock raised on degraded or wastelands that are not suited to agriculture, or through use of wastes and residues, thus avoiding a possible conflict of fuel and food security”.

He also offered “all possible assistance” from India to the development of renewable energy in Argentina.

India plans to add over 30GW of renewable energy to it electricity mix in the next five years.

Last year the World Bank said India could well be on its way to becoming a global leader in the development of solar power.
