European mayors are being asked to put their gold bling to good use – by pledging to help their cities prepare for climate change.

EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard launched the Mayors Adapt scheme in Brussels this week, along with the Mayors of Naples, Italy and Hasselt, Belgium and Manchester City Council member Neil Swannick.

As major centres of population and infrastructure, cities are said to be more vulnerable to extreme weather events and the effects of climate change.

The scheme’s aim is to make local authorities and mayors more aware of the importance of adapting to climate change and their ability to act despite limited means.

It hopes local authorities won’t go for “single and isolated” actions but have a long-term vision which involves the public, private and third sectors.
